MOUNT VERNON — After meeting 75 percent of its fundraising goal for a new day care center through private donations, The Salvation Army of Mount Vernon is turning to the community for the remainder.

The Army’s “Light the Day” capital campaign is a $6.25 million initiative that includes a new 13,720-square-foot childcare facility. The center will feature nine classrooms, a gym, an outside playground area, and a sensory room.

The center adds 76 spots for children aged 6 weeks and older.

“We’ve raised $4.75 million,” said Austin Swallow, chair of the capital campaign committee. “We have $1.5 million to go. Now we will start the public and business campaign.”

“We feel blessed to have received such a positive response from community members, organizations, corporations, and city and county leadership,” Capt. Christine Moretz said.

“In less than a year, we have secured 75% of our total goal that will enable us to expand our community center and provide new and expanded programs, including a new childcare center.”

Donations include $300,000 from the Knox County Foundation.

“While we have made great progress to date, our fundraising is still in high gear. We invite all members of the community to own a piece of this success by donating any amount they can at https://salarmy.us/LightTheDay,” she continued. “Together, we will help Knox County meet more needs in more ways.”

Day care center timeline

Swallow said The Salvation Army put the project out for bid.

“Those will come back on the 20th. There will be a period of review,” he said.

Swallow anticipates the review will take about 60 days as the Cleveland and New York Salvation Army offices must review the bids.

Construction will start after an August groundbreaking ceremony.

“We have to start building in August to get it under roof by winter,” Swallow said.

“We want to be done by June 2025 and commence [programs] by the 2025 school year.”

The current after-school program, The Learning Zone, will relocate to the new building. The Learning Zone houses 36 students. The additional child care placements bring the Army’s total care spaces to 112.

Swallow said the Army’s license will transfer to the new facility.

“We currently are a 1-star center. We will be a 2-star by the time we commence [in 2025],” he said. “Those stars help with more money coming from the state with aid.

“This care is for everyone,” Swallow added.

Moretz said the organization is honored and privileged to care for children and families because it impacts the community and the world.

“The Salvation Army has served this community in a variety of ways over the last 137 years and our Army marches on, always seeking new ways to reach all people,” she said. “We are looking to the future with vision and hope, in line with our mission to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human need in His name without discrimination.”

Strengthening the family

The Army will renovate its existing facility to create a Choice Food Pantry, supervised visitation area, and classroom and community space.

“The Salvation Army continues to work and serve as a beacon of light right here in Knox County,” Moretz said. “The Salvation Army Corps Community Center in Mount Vernon is committed to strengthening the family.

“In addition to childcare, the center also offers opportunities for worship, fellowship, education, and wholesome recreational activities for all ages.”
