Scholarship Fund checks totaling $542,350 will be distributed in August by the Community Foundation of Mount Vernon & Knox County to new and recent graduates of area high schools, as well as to several non-traditional students, according to Executive Director Sam Barone.

Scholarships from four new funds are among those being awarded for the 2012-13 academic year, including: the William Burgett Builders & Contractors Scholarship, the Nick Gaumer Scholarship, the Mount Vernon Machine & Tool Scholarships, and the Stephanie Thompson Sprang Scholarships.  Resources for these, nearly 90 other scholarship funds, have been provided by individuals and companies. With a few exceptions, the following scholarships are being awarded on a one-year basis:

Information concerning various Community Foundation Scholarship Funds was publicized in January, and distributed to area high school guidance counselors. A panel of judges including officials of Kenyon College and Mount Vernon Nazarene University reviewed 277 applications, recommending this year’s scholarship fund recipients to the Community Foundation board of directors.  Additional judges from the Foundation board and the community reviewed applications for the Gaunder, Hickman, and Purdy Scholarship Funds.
